CHAPTER 13

***LOUISA***

Louisa couldn’t find her voice for a second, “What are you doing home?” she finally asked. “Is everything okay?”

“We sold out in two days and had to come home,” Yvette answered, her eyes darting between Louisa and Derek. “I guess we should have called first.”

“Maybe I should go get dressed,” Derek said, getting to his feet. “I’ll be right back.”

She let him go but wished she could follow him, “Wow, that’s great news,” she said. “I was cooking breakfast. Would you like some?”

Both of her friends stared at her open-mouthed, “That’s it?” Jolene asked. “We come in and find you sitting in Derek’s lap, both of you half-naked, and all you can do is ask if we want breakfast.”

“I’m sorry, I wasn’t expecting you home this soon,” she said. “I don’t know what to say besides I took your advice, and I was having a little fun.”

Yvette narrowed her eyes at Louisa, then sniffed the air, “I smell magic,” she said. “And the air is charged with it. Did you tell him?”

“I didn’t have to, he caught me out in the woods,” she said, knowing she wasn’t doing a good job of explaining, but so nervous that her friends would be mad she couldn’t think straight. “I shifted and went for a run in the woods, Derek caught me, and….”

“Louisa, what were you thinking?” Jolene asked. “You never shift, why would you do it when you knew you could get caught?”

“It was an experiment,” she said, shrugging her shoulders. “I wanted to see what it felt like, it had been so long.”

Yvette let out a long sigh, “Now what are we going to do?” she asked. “Derek could spread our secret everywhere. I can’t believe you were so reckless.”

“He’s not going to tell anyone,” She said. “Come and sit down, I think you’ll understand when I tell you everything.”

Yvette and Jolene exchanged a look, “Is there any coffee left?” Jolene asked. “We’ve been up since before dawn.”

“I’ll get it, you two sit down,” she said, then hurried over and poured two cups of coffee. “I didn’t plan for you to find out this way.”

“I’m not sure what we’re finding out,” Jolene said. “But when I told you to have a little fun, I didn’t think you would go off the deep end and expose our secret to a virtual stranger.”

“He’s not a stranger,” she said, setting the cups on the table, then sitting down across from them. “He’s one of us.”

“What do you mean by one of us?” Yvette asked.

“I mean, he’s literally one of us,” she said, unable to hide the grin on her face. “Do you remember that boy I had a huge crush on right before we all turned eight, the one I had breakfast with sometimes?”

There was silence for a second, “Are you trying to tell us that Derek is that little boy?” Jolene finally asked, shaking her head. “That’s impossible.”

“I knew that I recognized him the first time I saw him in the grocery store,” she said.
